Fundraising tips

Just Ask

The big fundraising rule to remember is that you have to ASK. If you don't ask, you don't get. You'll likely find that people are eager to donate because in one way or another they're close to the cause.

Get Creative

Think differently. Host fundraising parties, bar nights, karaoke contests, raffles and auctions. Utilize social media, too. Ovarian Cancer Coalition of Greater CA has a Facebook page and an email badge that links people right to the event donation page. Many organizations do similar things; so get involved in the social media world. Fundraising is part of the experience. Whether you're walking 30 miles or doing a spring triathlon, every dollar you raise helps support a cause, and saves lives.

Start the Fundraising Process Early

Chris Bledy, Executive Director at OCC says timing is everything. "We never want people to procrastinate. Share your goals and efforts with friends and family the minute you sign up." It may take a while for your message for resonate with them, an occasional reminder is never a bad thing.

Find Your Personal Connection to the Cause

To be an effective advocate for a charity, you must have conviction about the work it does and the people who benefit from it. Some have very direct links to the cause and some may not, nearly every family in America has dealt with cancer issues. Coming together and showing support for Women's Health will ensure the discussion about preventative measures and regular check ups are common place in your family.

Share Your Story With the World

Successful fundraisers emphasize the importance of sending the message to everyone you possibly can. "Ask anyone and everyone...you never know who will give," said Ken Goodman, VP of OCC. It's impossible to predict who will relate strongly to your cause. "People always surprise you, I've even received significant contributions from my landlord and ex-boyfriends!" Use email as much as possible because it's so easy to forward. However, don't forget snail-mail, particularly for your parents and people they may know. Also send to any association, network, or congregation to which you belong. Often, they will forward the request to their entire membership list.

Utilize & Leverage Social Media

Tell your story on Facebook and Twitter. People will "like" and retweet your story to others who may donate. Friends may make a donation without even being asked, just because of your Facebook post. You can also use these sites as ways to document your progress raising money and preparing for the event.
